A Space for Budding Writers – Young Writer’s Corner

There are quite a few writers in our family, but we all prefer different mediums. From autobiographical blogs of self discovery, irrepressible social commentary in poetry to fiction. The latest writer of short stories is nearly 14 and given our mutual love for stories and books I thought my blog could be a suitable platform for young writers. So here’s the first short story for Young Writer’s Corner by Ahana Dasgupta.

My Father’s Friend

Dusk had fallen and the stars had started to twinkle in the evening haze. I had been playing in the neighborhood park & decided that it was time to go back home. Suddenly, I saw a man standing beneath a Eucalyptus tree & smiling at me in a familiar way. The man had a long, broad face and had bushy eyebrows with curly black hair. He was still smiling at me when I tried to recall if I know such a man. He beckoned to me to come closer & I went near the Eucalyptus tree. Now more close, I noticed that the man had a fat moustache & looked somewhat like a wolf.
“Do you recognize me?” asked the man, still smiling at me in a sweet way. He had a very harsh voice which sounded like a grunt.
“No, I’m afraid, I don’t” I said at once.

“Well, I am yours fathers friend Mahesh Palchoudhury” said the man calmly. “Mahesh Palchoudhury…….. but my father had never talked about such a friend”, I said feeling flabbergasted. The man or Mahesh told that he was an old friend and my father had probably forgotten all about him. He invited me to his house for tea.
I must admit that I was both confused and suspicious, but then I thought it would be foolish and childish to turn away, so I agreed. He merely smiled and led the path to his house along linstreet, which was even darker now.
We walked in silence except for the distant chirping of birds and buzzing of honeybees. We passed two alleyways and continued to walk along a deserted one. At least half an hour passed and we continued to walk in silence. I felt a bit irritated. “How much more do we have to go?” I asked Mahesh firmly. “Just 5 minutes to go” Mahesh replied. After a little while, Mahesh finally came to a halt at the end of a broad street.

“Follow me” Mahesh said and his voice was suddenly very powerful and dangerous.

He opened an iron gate and went inside, I following him. Inside was a small pathway at the end of which stood a small hut. It had two windows and one dusty door which looked as if it had not been used for weeks. I was eager to into the hut and see what was inside but Mahesh was only gazing up at the sky. I looked up at the sky and understood what he was gazing at……. the full moon. The full moon was very beautiful and the hut was looking ghostly in the moonlight.
“Excuse me, are we going to get into the hut?” I asked hopefully. Mahesh shifted his gaze from the full moon and stared at me instead and said, “Your voice is so soft and I love the crispness of your skin”, a nasty grin spreading across his face. I suddenly became alert of his intentions and moved a step backwards.

To my utmost horror, Mahesh’s body started to become hairy & his clothes tore open from his body, long pink ears started to develop from his curly hair& his eyes became yellowish and oval-shaped. There were pointed fangs instead of his teeth & a long pink tongue which was now dripping with saliva. He was on four legs now, covered in fur. I realized panic-stricken that Mahesh was a Werewolf. Slowly, Mahesh clambered toward me, a look of hunger in his face. He was so close to me that I could feel the smell of his hot breath slapping against my face. I started to run, but he was too fast for me. Mahesh raised his in a fierce howl and turned his gleaming, yellowish eyes on my face & sank his curved fangs deep into my skin, I screamed in pain and……….

I opened my eyes and saw myself lying in a small bed in a circular familiar room. Beside the bed, stood a thin, fair, familiar-looking woman. My mother was yelling at me at the top of her lungs, “You idiot, get up fast, it’s 7:30 already and you are getting late for school”- My mind was still full of what I had seen in the dream. “Ma, does baba have a friend called Mahesh Palchoudhury?” I asked fearfully. “Oh yes, of course” replied my mother irritably.

“Oh God, ma then he is a Werewolf- I just saw…”
“Stop muttering utter rubbish and go get ready”, Ma snapped.
I thought of the idea of my father’s friend being a werewolf. Laughing aloud at my own wit, I climbed out of bed to get ready for school.

Review: The Turquoise Tower by Travis Simmons

NEWLY RELEASED…..

Review

Like all good things come to an end, The Revenant Wyrd Saga shall end too with flourish at The Turquoise Tower.

Angelica, Jovian and Joya finally seem closer to rescuing their sister, but will they? All the forces of the Realms have gathered with their own agendas. Angelica and Jovian discover some truths about themselves, does this change their future?

Everything spells war from the beginning of this book and seems unavoidable, however, nothing during their long quest prepared them for the climax.

Travis Simmons, end to the Revenant Wyrd Saga seemed fitting but, I personally would have preferred a different ending.

The Turquoise Tower (The Revenant Wyrd Saga #6)
The captivating sequel to A Guardian of Shadows.

In the mystical lands of the Great Realms, Angelica, Jovian, and Joya search for their kidnapped sister, Amber. Their quest has led them through many dangers and revelations, but nothing has prepared them for what’s about to come.

A dream reveals what Angelica and Jovian are, but what does it mean for their future? There’s little time to dwell on this, for the chaos dwarves, the scourge of the Realm of Earth, are gathering at the gates of the Guardian’s Keep. The dwarves have the stone Wyrders’ Bane, and they’ve shown they know how to unleash its plague upon all those who wield the magical force of wyrd. With casters neutralized, a mighty blow has been dealt to the allied forces. The dwarves and trolls attack the keep, and the struggle to survive the war in the north is upon them.

Angelica, Jovian, and Joya’s journey is far from easy, but the future looks even bleaker when visions of a gathering darkness in the west and a congregation of angels could mark the beginning of the final war on the Ever After.

About the Author

Travis has been writing since he was 14. He began writing a book called “The Calling of the Two” and while writing that on and off he started uncovering another idea.

“Yes, this is all well and good, but what about before? What happened in the world before these characters came into it?” He always knew there was a “before” and as he started wondering about it he got ideas. At first they were little ideas but as he discovered the names for his characters a whole story about them emerged.

Travis started working on The Revenant Wyrd Saga several years back and he is very happy he did because hearing and documenting Jovian and Angelica’s story has been one wild ride for him. He has also written the Infernal Design series.

He lives in a small town at the base of the Adirondack Mountains and hoofing around my neck of the woods gives him a ton of inspiration for his novels. He loves research, and speculating on different ideas and theories.

Review: Wings of Chaos by Travis Simmons

NEWLY RELEASED…..

Review:

This series has been a long journey of discovery for the protagonists and the readers. Here, On the Wings of Chaos, we finally learn a bit more about the original four, Angelica, Jovian, Joya and Amber. They go back to their original goal of looking for their sister Amber. As usual there is a lot happening around them and a few glimpses of what is about to unfold in their future is very fascinating. In his detailed descriptions which are nearly photographic, Travis Simmons has managed to awe his readers again with the transfusion of the clean Wyrd into Sara.
Other transformations are also commendable but this one’s my favourite.

Dear Readers, do read all the books to get an all round experience of the world of the Wyrd. Just one review of one book in the middle of the series does not do justice.

Review: A Guardian of Shadows by Travis Simmons

NEWLY RELEASED …..

Review

Amber is still lost but, we now know what ails the Realm of the Earth. The constant evolving pace of the Revenant Wyrd Saga is what keeps me hooked. Series often tend to get watered down and Simmons has had his moments too but, the story is beautifully told in a vivid and imaginary world which is quite believable.

Unpredictability is key in this series. I did not expect Amber to remain lost still but, that also ensures that other characters who had minor roles in the beginning had a chance to flourish and become equally important to the plot. This sequel leaves the readers with a series of questions and paves a way for The Wings of Chaos. Will one of the siblings become a guardian? When will Amber be found? Who are the Wyr? Whose beliefs about the Wyr are true? What lives within the Shadow Realm?

To answer all your questions please do read the series The Revenant Wyrd Saga. You might feel a lot of things if you do start reading the series but, I promise you will not be bored.

A Guardian of Shadows (The Revenant Wyrd Saga #4)

The thrilling sequel to The Well of Wyrding.

In the enchanted lands of the Great Realms, Angelica, Jovian, and Joya are searching for their kidnapped sister, Amber. Their quest has led them through many dangers and many excitements, but nothing has prepared them for what’s about to come.

The wyr are alive, the Two who were never supposed to exist. They are destined to control the wyrd and fate of all mankind. Their very existence is destroying the world tree, on whose roots the fate of man is etched, and causing the Well of Wyrding, which sustains the world tree, to dissolve. Now Angelica and Jovian are hunted by the Norns, those three sisters of fate who guard the world tree and live at its roots, observing and preserving fate, who believe Angelica and Jovian are the wyr.

Angelica, Joya, and Jovian are on a race to escape the Norns as well as find their sister Amber, but with no clue where she could be, they turn their attention toward home, deep in the Holy Realm. The problem? Between them and their destination is the accursed land of eternal night: the Shadow Realm. Rumored to be filled with nightmarish creatures, forsaken to its shadowy depths, the Shadow Realm promises death to any from the Holy Realm who dare enter.

Review: The Well of Wyrding by Travis Simmons

The Well of Wyrding is the third book of the Revenant Wyrd Saga, where the journey continues. Other than the toxic magical presence of the Well of Wyrding, which is the main theme of this book, the book also provides answers, clues and more pieces to the puzzle. Unpredictability is key, Travis Simmons  and his imagination has as usual kept the readers guessing. The main characters have been further developed and we now know more about some of the supporting cast like Grace, Dalah and Rosalee.

Travis Simmons has also been very consistent with the pace of the book and constant development of the world he has created. The Well of Wyrding is a crucial piece of the puzzle the Revenant Wyrd Saga is, without it the rest of the books would fall apart. However, this also means that a detailed discussion about it would be fraught with spoilers!

Once again, to a reader who hasn’t been following the saga, reading from the beginning is the only way to enjoy the Revenant Wyrd Saga.

The Well of Wyrding (The Revenant Wyrd Saga #3)

“Experience the long anticipated sequel to The Mirror of the Moon.

In the fantastical lands of the Great Realms, Angelica, Jovian, and Joya are on the search for their older sister Amber, who has been kidnapped by the villain, Porillon. But Amber has slipped away from all of them, and where she has gone is as big a mystery as why she was taken. While they are searching for their sister, Porillon strikes a staggering blow to the entire land.

The Well of Wyrding, a mythic well which contains the magic and fate of every creature in the Great Realms, has been poisoned creating havoc as the magic power of wyrd becomes toxic.

While Grace, Rosalee, and Dalah seek a way to purify the Well of Wyrding, wyrd is going haywire, buildings fashioned with wyrd are turning to pinnacles of terror; wyrd is working against its casters; and people are taking up arms against the threat sorcerers and their kind pose.

But the toxic wyrd is causing a new problem to arise. They are called caustics: those wyrders who have been completely taken over by their chaotic wyrd. Husks of what they once were, they are now a vessel for Chaos in the realms.”

Review: The Mirror of the Moon by Travis Simmons

After a rather flamboyant start with The Bonds of Blood (The Revenant Wyrd Saga Book 1), Travis Simmons jumps right into the story ,where he left off, with The Mirror of the Moon.

Jovian, Angelica and Joya Neferis are on a quest to rescue their sister Amber, who has been abducted by an evil sorceress, with the help of their elusive guide Grace. As their journey progresses they soon realize that there is more to Grace than meets the eye and she hasn’t been telling them the whole truth. The series of unfortunate, sinister and dark events that are unfolding have larger implications and involve all of them to a larger conspiracy of evil.

As a sequel The Mirror of the Moon is as action packed and detailed as The Bonds of Blood but, it tends to lose pace right in the middle of the drama. Every time Simmons switches between scenes there are a few pages where the writer, the reader and the characters are all lost in the woods and then they suddenly get their act together and start being exciting again! As a traveller, I understand that because there are periods of monotony or inaction during every journey. But, this is a book, a journey of epic proportions undertaken in a magical space by the Neferis children who are a part of a greater plot, so, I would expect a little more excitement. However, there is no compromise on the writers part when it comes to creating this magical space. The astonishing details brings the world alive for readers. Every culture, character, creature that the Neferis children meet has a rich cultural background thus reinforcing the idea of the magical world they live in and also providing  a believable context for the reader.

If you have been following the Revenant Wyrd Saga I suggest you read The Mirror of the Moon. If you are not, please do go back and read The Bonds of Blood.

The Revenant Wyrd Saga cannot be and should not be read as stand alone books because every story is connected to a greater consciousness, or as the blurb suggests one consciousness. Evil or good is yet to be revealed.

The Mirror Of The Moon (The Revenant Wyrd Saga #2)

The exciting sequel to The Bonds of Blood.

In the mystical lands of the Great Realms,twenty-one year-old Angelica, Jovian, and Joya pair up with their mentor Grace in pursuit of their kidnapped sister and heir to their plantation, Amber. Their quest suddenly changes when an ancient enemy of their family, Porillon, appears with Amber. A dangerous battle ensues, threatening one of their lives, and a new insight about their family is revealed, making the group question what Grace knows, and what she might be hiding. Porillon slips away with Amber, but Angelica and Jovian’s visions hint that their sister may have been taken to the Mirror of the Moon, an ancient temple dedicated to the Goddess.

Finding sanctuary with the elves and dwarves in the Mountains of Nependier, the group presses Grace to answer questions about their family’s past. Their insistence leads to a revelation the youths aren’t ready to handle. While they are still reeling from the news, Angelica and Jovian begin to feel a strange new consciousness waking inside of them, and what’s more unnerving, it’s taking over their individual thoughts…and joining them into one.

The Fifteenth Member #atozchallenge by K.M.

There lived a family with twenty-six members. Suddenly, a member went missing. And just when it was her day. Just when the rest planned giving her special care and maybe even a treat, she was apparently mislaid, misplaced, absent, vanished. “Where can she be?” asked the rest. “We need her badly, desperately, urgently. She’s crucial, essential, indispensable, irreplaceable.”
It was then that the missing member answered, still hiding, “Well, managing fine in my absence, it seems.”
“She’s such a child,” the rest whispered. “All she wants is we take extra interest in her. But then, that is what we’ve been planning all this time.”
They were in despair. Persuading the petulant seemed a difficult task. Then it struck a member: “Why, we have been managing despite her absence, indeed. Think, search, seek, hunt. All these lines, and where is she? Where is O?
And just as the last word was uttered, she came out of her hiding – smiling – the One and Only O.

Count of Monte Cristo: A photo diary #atozchallenge

Discovering a set or a house created for a fictional character and visiting a place which inspired a writer to include it in his story is very different. I think I like the latter better. I’ve been to the Sherlock Holmes museum at 221 B Baker Street and I was quite unimpressed. Although the replication from fiction is brilliant. I couldn’t help thinking, well, all these artifacts aren’t real! Holmes really didn’t smoke this pipe or wear that hat did he?

However, Chateau d’If the fortress and then prison which inspired Alexandre Dumas to use it in his book the Count of Monte Cristo, really exists and it really was a prison once a upon a time. It is really a remote and uninhabited island. The only fabrication being, there were no single cells for prisoners originally but, there was one in the book and there is one now to tell the story.

London in books #atozchallenge

Dear Reader,

By now you should know that I love books. I eat and sleep with them, gaze at them with adoration and mostly read them too. I am lucky enough to live in a city entrenched in history and popularity. So, as a tribute to London during my A to Z blog challenge, I’ve decided to list my top favourite books about London. These may not be the best, but are books that I’ve enjoyed reading, browsing and gifting friends and family, who have visited me in London.

London’165242_LondonStrangeTales_jkts Strangest Tales by Tom Quinn is a delightful and quirky book which I always gift the bookworms. It pleases, amuses and informs. You need not visit London to read it and that is why it is a wonderful book to gift, when you return home after a visit to London.

I remember spending two hours in a bookshop reading it before buying it for a friend.

Bizarre London by David Long, on the other hand, is written for the ‘curious Londoner’. Youdo need to know London a bit to get the humour or the oh-

6436846I-know-where-that-is moments. At the most read it on the train or flight while you are travelling to London. Or, buy it once you’ve done the top 10 things to do in London. This book  will take you on a truly bizarre tour of London. Some of the curious facts mentioned here might make you jump of your seat and run off to check whether the facts were true.

160080_Inever_jktI Never Knew That About London by Christopher Winn does not have any shocking surprises or dirty little secrets but, it is treasure trove of history for the amateur historian. Real historians might turn up their noses but since I am not one of them I am happy to learn about London’s historical past in an easily digestible and amusing book.

I Never Knew That About London unearths the hidden gems of legends, firsts, inventions, adventures and birthplaces that shape the city’s compelling, and at times, turbulent past.

While parents rush from sight to site children need something to amuse themselves. Alsothis is London young travellers need to know more about what they see around them. So my favourite recommendation is an illustrated picture book. Although quite retro, Miroslav Sasek’s This is London will amuse and inform everyone.

Last but one of the greatest books on London. London a Biography by Peter Ackroyd. This is for the serious Londoner, the historian, the London obsessive, who wants to know moreLondon Petr ackroyd about this massive city-like living organism.

One of my recent finds at Waterstones is a gem and worth a mention. It’s unique and a window into London’s current situation with high rates of immigration. Not all immigrants are here for a chance of a better life. There are some who will always remain awestruck bystanders, or talented people who’ll look at London a little differently than most.

Reading Bhajju Shyam’s The London Junglejunglebook Book changes your perspective of the world and its people completely.

About the Author: Bhajju Shyam, of the acclaimed The Night Life of Trees, is the finest living artist of the Gond tribe in India. Intricate and colourful, Bhajju’s work is well-known throughout India and has been exhibited in the UK, Germany, Holland and Russia. From the walls of his tribal village home to international acclaim, Bhajju’s has been an incredible creative journey.

I hope you enjoy reading and discovering books like I do.

All the very best for your next trip to London.
